I have a user running XPp sp2 on a non-dual boot system. It takes 2 minutes after clicking shutdown from the start menu for the shutdown menu to display. I've already made sure the system is not clearing the pagefile and i've killed every running task I think I safely can. Still, it takes 2 minutes, exactly 2 minutes. Any ideas?

u could try this

Start Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

[HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

Or, using Group Policy Editor [for Windows XP Professional]

Click Start, Run and type Secpol.msc
Click Local Policies | Security Options
In the right-pane, set Shutdown: Clear virtual memory pagefile to Disabled

hope this is of help

I appreciate the help but as fortune would have it i've already been there and done that. Meaning i've been to the website suggested and looked at the shutdown setting in secpol. Thanks again though!

Hi, NullOp

2 mins sure sounds like a timeout delay.

Are there any shares in use on resources which are not available at shutdown time?

Are all local devices active and ready and OK in device manager?

Are there any phantom printers or disconnected USB devices?

Does the same thing happen in safe mode?

Anything in the logs?

How is Shutdown from Safe Mode, or from Normal Mode but as a different User?

What if any errors are in the Event Viewer?

Some general things to try.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If you have set autoendtask to 1 in registry and it still takes 2 minutes to shutdown, then you either have not ran defrag in a very very long time or my guess is you are infected.

Id advise running defrag and chkdsk then running a full system scan here.
