XP Pro Screen Saver DNWs 1

Since patch Tuesday in Nov, the screen saver on one of my systems simply doesn't function.

No matter which screen saver, 3D or otherwise, it just never kicks in. I am able to preview any screensaver no problem, and when previewing it will run indefinitely, but no matter what timeout setting it will never start on its own.

Environment is XP Pro, SP2 fully patched. Only recent changes were IE7 and changed to wireless KB/Mouse. The Task Scheduler service is set to Automatic and is started. Scheduled tasks such as backup and updates are happening normally.

I am aware of Q306676, but that problem affects only 3D screensavers, so I haven't applied the patch.

I wasn't going to worry about this, but one of my associates happened to mention today he has had the same problem lately, which got me wondering.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jock

The Mouse might be faking movement as it is wireless, which is why the system never detects its not being used. its always getting input from the mouse.

Have your tried swapping out the mouse for a PS2 one see if that works?

Hi, Vacunita

I thought about that but figured if it wasn't kicking it out of preview it was OK, but you might be right - I'll swap in a tethered beastie & let you know.

Thanks for your reply.

Hi, Vacunita

Yep, that was it alright. Put in original PS2 KB & Mouse and screen saver back to normal.

So now I know where it is, at least. The prev wireless combo worked OK, so I'll play with sender placement and USB ports and such.

Thanks for your help - star for you.
