XP PRo on NT 4.0 network

Our file server is a NT 4.0 box. Whe I access files from my XP pro workstation it seems to lock the files as readonly to other users even after i have closed the files. THis also happens whenever I copy files from my XP Pro workstation to the network server. Sometime i can't even open them because it says the file is in use by me. I clearly do not have the file open however. Has anyone seen this behavior?
