What is the difference in the XP pro - OEM version and the full blown $300 version, other than paperwork.

I though I read that Microsoft does not support updates and tech support for the OEM version.
Is this the difference?

This is Windows 95/98 forum.

Support is the same for OEM and retail versions. OEM version is legally bundled to hardware you bought it with, and you are not allowed to transfer it to another PC. Retail version you can install on which PC you want.

You can download updates with the OEM version. However, there is no tech support from Microsoft. All support is to be provided by the system builder, which is described in the OEM EULA.

As Karlis stated, you cannot legally transfer an OEM license to another PC. Once activated, it will only work on the PC it was installed on. Vendors can only sell OEM operating systems with hardware.

You can get XP Pro retail for well under $300. Here's a vendor I've purchased from before:

The XP Pro SP1 is only $185, and the one with SP2 is $205.
