I just found out from Microsoft, the the XP Media Edition on my boss's laptop, is a version of XP Pro. Now, the problem I have, is the Domain is greyed out to try and set it up to access our company network. Does any one have a solution?

I have been on the phone with MS for the past 90 minutes. They have me running a chkdsk /r. This should take about an hour, and they will call me back (hopefully) after that timeframe to see if anything was fixed.

Please help.

Normally Media center may not be Joined to a domain, which of course doesn't necessarily mean it can't be joined, just that it isn't supported by Microsoft.
Here are a few threads that deal with it:

thread779-1321076
thread779-1319058
thread779-1355023

and here's one site from a google search that details what needs to be done to accomplish it:

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Thanks for the information. It just does not make sense that they would take XP Pro and turn it into their MCE. IF XP Pro is the better software, then leave all the elements there.

Again, thanks for the information. I know you are not the original poster of the information, but you still deserve a star.

Thanks!!

Your welcome. Microsoft does this because it doesn't think
anybody that uses Media Center will need to join a domain.

That's why I always tell my clients to get the Pro, or if Vista the Business version of it. You never know when you might need something the Home versions or the MCE versions don't provide. and if you don't need anything You still have a nice working OS. So you really don't loose anything maybe a few dollars since Pro or Business tends to be slightly more expensive.

I know exactly what you mean. Unfortunately my boss chose to buy his new laptop without consulting me first. Personally I think would prefer Pro no matter what.

I tried the steps. They worked perfectly. I don't think he will miss anything with Extender not functioning. He did not buy this laptop for the MC. It is strictly for work.

Again, Thanks!!!

You are very welcome.
