XP Pro and Java in Web Browsers

I am running the latest version of XP Pro SP2 fully patched. I also have the latest version of Microsoft Virtual Java Machine. However, whenever I go to a web site that has java in it. The browser closes with no error message. This happens when I use IE and also when I use Firefox. This happens on many different sites. The problem must have something to do with the operating system since I have the same behavior with multiple broswers.
How can I fix this? I already tried clearing my browser cache. I have 2Ghz P4 processor and a gig of memory so I don’t lack for system’s resources.
