I have some PCs that when I build them and have not yet added them to our domain the systems will open new directories in the same folder - which is how I want it to be.

So if I go to My Computer, C: then windows, its all in the same folder.

But once I add this PC to the domain and login as a domain user, suddenly instead of one window, I have three.

According to my domain admins, they have not set any policies that would affect this. I've tried combing through the policy editor and using rsop.msc, but I can't seem to find the right one.

I know that there is a reg hack which *should* correct this, but once I exit as a user and re-enter, the policy over rides and we're back to square one.

I need to find the exact policy and point it out to the server side guys so that they can correct it.

Any ideas?

The account that you are using, does not have the same "settings" as the local account. Once you logged in with your domain account, you essentially have used another account. There are no settings that are going to be on the server side that will prevent this from happening. You could change the settings on the "domain" account, and this will alleviate your issue, but depending on whether you have a roaming profile, will depend on whether the settings will be going to other machines.

The other issue, which I forgot to mention is that the local policies that are applied to the PC's will not be applied if there are domain policies that over-ride your settings. However, I still believe that this is an account issue, not a policy issue.

I agree with tfg13 - don't modify these settings until AFTER you login with your domain account.

Or,change all settings (folder settings, start menu, desktop) to what you want them to be, then reboot.

Then, login as a local administrator (not the user you were logged in as before the reboot).

Right click my computer, properties, advanced, profiles.

Copy the profile you modified to c:\docs and settings\default user (you will have to turn on hidden files and folders to browse there)

THis will make the default for ANY user who has never logged onto that machine previously to whatever you set (unless your domain uses roaming profiles).

Thanks,
Andrew

Ok...I understand that we're talking about two different profiles and I guess I should have beena bit more clear.

But even when I go in as a user class account, make the changes to open in the same folder, as soon as I log out and log back in, the settings are right back where I don't want them to be.

As to the default user, we've had no luck getting this to work.

I'm just trying to locate where it is in the domain policy setting that specifies this functionality. Is there a different policy editor than gpedit that I should try to access the domain policies? FYI - I have full domain privileges, the regular server admins just don't have time to work with the rest of us on issues at present.
