I have a PC with a fresh install of XP and the firewall shut off that will not connect to the internet unless plugged into my little Hawking Router. I know its probably somehting simple, but intially i was going directly from sbc/yahoo dsl to the built-in NIC-it was automatically assigning itself one 169.x.x.x. I brought it home and connected to my comcast cable modem, same thing. I plugged in to the cable modem directly via usb - automatic IP asigned again (you know the 169.x.x.x address) I Installed a new network card, plugged into the cable modem directly--169.x.x.x I finally got frustrated and pulled out my little cheap router and ran the cable connection into the wan port and then plugged this PC into one of the lan connections built-in to the router - voila! I have an IP assigned and internet. I dont understand why it wont get an IP if it is plugged in directly. I checked XP and it said dhcp is up and running; I mean if it wasnt I woudnt get a connection from the router either. So I just dont get why this damn thing wont connect on its own as I said I have tried it on sbc/yahoo dsl modem and on my comcast cable modem. PLease help! Iw as not sure if this is the right forum for this as it could be an XP issue, or a network card--but it seems something is askew with dhcp. NUTSHELL: connects fine when plugged into router, receives 192.x.x.x address; when plugged in directly to cable or dsl modem, it gets 169.x.x.x address and it only sends--but does not receive packets. Help!

Symptoms: 1) you have a DHCP client which may not be able to obtain/renew IP addresses from the DHCP server intermittently. 2) after setup a workstation to obtain an IP address from DHCP, the machine can't ping others and ipconfig /all shows Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.x.x.
Resolutions: 1) If this is XP, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP.
2) Use the Network Diagnostics tool to identify any failed settings. To do this, go to Help and Support>Use Tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems>Network Diagnostics>Scan your system. When the process finishes, check for any items marked "FAILED" in red, expand those categories, and view the additional details about what the testing showed.
3) Assign a static ip on the client and ping the DHCP server. If you can't ping the DHCP server, check the connection and hardware.
4) If you can ping the DHCP after assigning static ip, check the DHCP settings.
5) Make sure no firewall is running on your LAN.
6) Run Repair this connection if it is XP. Or use netsh to reset TCP/IP configuration.
7) If it is win98/w2k, remove and reinstall TCP/IP.
8) Try to upgrade the new NIC driver.
9) Make sure you don't run out of IPs in the DHCP scope.
10) If you use a router as DHCP, you may want to upgrade the firmware

doesn't sbc require you to configure a username/password for the connection? I believe I configured my linky with a username/password. And I also think you have to run their little software program if you link up directly, which will setup the network connection for you, including username/pass.
Just a thought.

OK I have service pack one, and I ran the utility posted chicago--but still no dice. Somebody told me that because I have this pc at home and it is not mine and am trying to connect to comcast cable with this different machine, that it doesnt recognize the MAC address and wont let me connect. I worked on it at the guys office and it wouldnt conect to sbc/yahoo dsl, it had lots of spyware and such so I brought it home, reformatted and reinstalled XP. i thought that would solve everything but it wont connect to my comcast cable at home (unless its connected to my router)now even after wiping the machine. Is there some reason it wouldnt get dhcp from the cable modem, but will get it from the router? when i connect directly to the cable modem with MY PC, it works, when I connect directly with the one in question--nothing, if I connect the one in question to my little Hawking router--I get a 192.x.x.x and evrything is fine.
There are 2 types of LAN cable a cross and straight.
Try using a cross cable to connect directly to cable modem. It's the only reasonable solution I can think off if the MAC issue is not the cause.
Internet --> cable modem - cross cable - PC.
If not working, try the other way around
