XP - No Services

XP machine suddenly in Safe Mode on starting up. Cannot get out to normal mode. No internet, no Printers etc. No anything really
First check was msconfig and sure enough all services, bar 2 I think, disabled. And the BOOT.INI se to go into Safe Mode.

Restart all services and disable most of the startup group and it all boots up again and looks like working.

Am due for a big Adware and virus scans tomorrow.
The question is what hit me??

Any guidance and hints will help tomorrow

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

See what you can determine from your Event Viewer about any errors or problems.
