Hi !!

I have a question and I'm hoping somebody can help me. I've got 2 computers connected via a crossover cable (with 3 network cards) hooked on to a DSL connection. Both computers work fine and I could surf the net on both of them. I can also ping the other computer and it can ping mine. We can share files and all is good. BUT for some odd reason in my "Network Connections" under the Heading "Internet Gateway" I have an icon saying "Internet Connection" with a status that always says "Connecting". If I right click on it, the options "Connect/Status/Delete" cannot be chosen (they're disabled). Do I need this icon? How can I get rid of it? AND if I do will it effect the shared internet connection?

Any information would help.

many thanks
FF

The IGD notification icon, and the Gateway appearance in network properties can be fussy. You can improve the odds:

. Make sure that the UPnP client service, and SSDP Discovery services are running on both machines. Check Administrative Tools, Services, to make sure both services are started. (Check too under Network Connections, Advanced, Optional Networking Components, that both services are installed).
. Client firewall: You have to permit on your LAN subnet trusted traffic on these ports:

TCP: 2869, 5000
UDP: 1900

. As a note, I found the use of XP's Service Pack 2 RC 2 to be more stable in displaying the IGD notification:
I added the TCP port 5000 to UPnP eventing to the list of exceptions permitted through the firewall.

hello,

My connection is not wireless and all works fine. Should it always say "Connecting" even when all works well?

The other machine is winME

thanks,
ff

Wireless? I do not understand the reference.

If your firewall is blocking any of the ports above it will say Connecting.

Hi,

OH, OK, so it's the firewall thats' doing that. How can I fix?

thanks

Open these three ports on your LAN subnet: (192.168.0.x)

TCP: 2869, 5000
UDP: 1900

Hi...

OK, thanks, how do I do that??

Or is it better just to disable those services you mentionned??

thanks,
FF

They are tied to ICS. Leave the services alone.

I do not know what firewall you are using on either machine, the method of opening these ports differ by firewall product.

hi,

im using the winxp pro firewall that came with windows xp pro. any ideda on how to do that?

any help much appreciated,
thanks,
ff

Many DSL routers now have a firewall built into them. Look in the manual for how to access the DSL modem/router itself.
