My friend has recently upgraded from windows 98se to Xp. he has another computer which dials up the internet through his modem (ICS). Now when ever he boots his xp computer it continually tries to connect to the internet every 5 secs. This never happened before with both computers running 98se. driving him nuts. Any idea how to stop it and or an explanation of what the F&*ck is going on. Fresh install of XP after format. Made an ICS disk from XP and installed it on 98se machine, as xp instructed me too. If you disconnect the network it stops trying to dial up. So I assume its network related. Hope yous can help, thanks in advance. If your unsure....Dont do it!

go to internet potions in the controll panal and select connections and make sure the connect automaticaly is unchecked

Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem

which machine has modem? (your description sounds like its second - still 98? machine, but ICS installed on XP?)

Thanks for your input nightowl, I have been in the modem prperties, and checked "never dial a connection" I have tried all i can see but it still wants to connect as soon as you boot up the xp machine. Wolluf, The 2 computers are Celeron 766mhz running XP with a topic 56K modem and his daughters Cirix 333mhz which conects through his modem using ICS. Never had this problem with both machines running Win ME (sorry I made a mistake when I said one machine was running 98se) one is XP with modem the other is Win ME. If your unsure....Dont do it!

Are you by any chance using Norton System Works or Anti Virus? If so norton will dial up on its own to update itself , Go into options and see if this is the case Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem

Did you check msconfig and see if any program in there is trying to access your modem?
