I have just built a new computer with Win XP Home. I have the following problems and need help:

1. The BIOS does not save any settings if I unplug the power supply. I have already changed the CMOS battery.
~How do I stop this form happening?

2. I have a Creative Labs 8x4x32 CD-RW successfully installed, however, every time I start Windows the hardware manager wants to install the CD-RW and gives an error with the installation. Following this error the CD-RW is present and works just fine. I have searched for Creatives' drivers but there are none.
~How do I stop the hardware manager from wanting to install an existing component?

3. I have a USB printer (Lexmark Z22) but Windows doesn't find the USB connected component to allow installation.
~How do I get Windows to see the USB connection so I can install this printer?

Please advise.

Thanks, Terbo

Not knowing any more than that, I'd say the Clear CMOS jumper is in the wrong position. Motherboard manual.

Thanks Berton. I'll check that and get back with you. Terbo

I still have problems with these issues. Can anyone shed some light for me? Terbo

1) I know this may sound trivial but make sure you are pressing the right buttons in the bios. I am used to very kind now but some use F10 as save and exit and some use F10 and other things. Also check that there is a jumper on the 1-2 pins which should be near the bios battery. If there is no pin, or a pin on 2-3 put a pin on 1-2. Get on a different computer and look for a bios revisions as your bios may not be working right.

2) What's the error that it's giving you? If the add new hardware wizard cannot finish it will retry evey time windows restarts as you have noticed. This is normal behavior. The only way i can think of too stop it is to either find a way to make the installer finish or to disable the device in device manager (which will probably render the cd-rw unusable anyways). --- Just thought of something, make sure you have sufficeint privalages to finish the install ---

3)Make sure you are following the instructions provided. Lexmark like to have it's drivers installed before the printer is plugged in. If the new device found wizard does not start when you plug a usb device in, it's another type of problem. Check the device manager, see if the usb root hub ( may not be exactly the same wording ) is listed. On the machines i've seen it's listed down near the bottom when you expand the usb tab. Also while you are there check to see if your printer is being recognized. If the usb root hub doesn't show up there, the usb ports are most likely disabled in the bios.
