I'm setting up a brand new computer, it has had Win 98
running fine on it, but the user requires XP.

I have formated the drive, and stuck the CD.

But it is stopping at the point when
it's still in the intial blue setup screen,
at the bottom it says
Setup is starting windows

Then nothing,
I have tired a new hard drive, a different copy
of XP.

Run a PCcheck software and everything was ok.

I am stuck any suggestions?

Thanks for any help.

If you have tried a different HDD AND a different copy of XP then possibly it's the CD-ROM.

Try either:
1) Copying files from cd to USB PEN - If BIOS is USB bootable

2)Change the CD-Drive

Thanks steve....

Out of interest is the copy of XP from an original CD or been copied (legally of course)?

Reason I ask is that I have had problems in the past buring at a decent speed and then running the CD on older CD drives

First thing id do is try the CD in a different PC. This will see if the CD is faultly, which can happen with even new CD's.

if the pc was running win98 then the hardware is likely to be old. have you checked that the hardware meets minimum specs? see link below, the same spec apply to home edition

I have now tried a few different copies of XP (all orginal), and different CD drives and Hard drives.
It doesn't boot from USB

It's a brand new PC,
with the following spec.

ASRock K7VT4A+
AMD Sempron 2800+
Nvidia MX4000
1Gb Memory

It goes through
"Setup is loading files" but when it gets to
"Setup is starting windows" it just stops.

Any further suggestions
Thanks for you help with this.

Steve

Ok....

Can you get access to another machine?

My only other suggestion from a remote side of things would be to check BIOS updates for your MOBO, apply these and retry.

You say you have tried different HDD's yeah?

if you have a working XP CD and installed to a known working hard drive then you need Mulder and Scully!

seriously though, if everything works with W98 but not Win xp and you have tried everything that you have then i can only think there is a piece of hardware that win xp doesnt like. I would try changing the other hardware bits one at a time for know working hardware to eliminate each peice of kit in turn, eg RAM, then Graphics card etc
