Hello all,

I've installed and reinstalled a number of OS on different machines, but I'm having trouble with XP (SP2 slipstreamed). I've already installed it (from the same CD) on the computer in question, but I've swapped hard disks and want to do a fresh install on the new one. I partitioned/formatted to my needs on another system and then installed the HD as 1-Primary, booted from the installation CD and got to the point where the system reboots, I select "XP setup" and the message "Windows is starting" comes up. At this point the monitor goes black and an error message (visibly from the monitor itself) something like "28.9k out of range 69.0" (out of range is red and flashing); From this point on, I can only reboot, but it's pointless because I invariably get the same error.

This is odd because I have already installed (from the same CD) and run XP on this machine.

When I open up the monitor's menu, I see the resolution is set to 700*420 (I think), 31.2k 69.0 (or thereabouts).

Any ideas? I've got an ATI Rage 8Mb graphics card installed, but I don't think it's at cause.

Any help appreciated!

It sounds like a refresh rate problem. The windows setup is putting the monitor into a refresh rate that it cant handle. Try swapping monitors with a different kind and that may resolve it (assuming the PC is still active at this point and doesnt lock or reboot).

Once setup is finished, you should be able to return to the original monitor, just verify that windows is running a lower video mode (1024X768) and a refresh rate of 75Hz or less first.
