I have successfully added an XP pro machine in a win2000 domain using the network identification wizard. Upon rebooting and logging in as local admin I get 2 errors in my application log.

Event ID 1053
Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted.

On the win2k server I notice that a DHCP address is assigned to this workstation but the DNS doeson't have an entry for this computer. I suspect that is the issue. So then I did an IPconfig /registerdns. That doesn't do anything still no registration of XP machine and no errors in either the win2k server logs or XP machine. I can't seem to get this XP machine registered with the win2k servers DNS. I did an IPconfig and my dns server is in there with the correct info. I do have my win2k machine pointing to itself for DNS. I even took the XP machine out of the domian and re-added it several times. I am at a loss what to do.

The issue may be at the server, and there are other factors to consider at the client:
Check TCP/IP Properties, Advanced, DNS to make sure you have enabled DNS registration. Also check the WINS tab to make certain your WINS (if used), LMHOSTS (if used) are correctly set for the client. Enable 'Netbios over TCP/IP'
