A few months ago I upgraded my AMD 800MHZ desktop PC from Win98 to XP home.
For some reason when I shutdown the PC, it seems to go into restart. Normally I would expect it to power off but the system reboots.

Can someone help here?.
I am fairly new to XP.

thanks
Mike

REBOOT INSTEAD OF SHUTDOWN
"Most Win XP shutdown problems reported thus far have been that it reboots when shutdown is attempted. This may be a global symptom emerging from several distinct causes, because, by default, XP executes an automatic restart in the event of a system failure. Therefore, more or less anything compromising the operating system during the shutdown process could force this reboot.

Disabling the “restart on system failure” feature may permit the exact cause to be isolated: Right-click on My Computer, click Properties, click the Advanced tab. Under “Startup & Recovery,” click Settings. Under “System Failure,” uncheck the box in front of “Automatically restart.”"

many thanks to all your responses.
I will give them a go.

On shutdown, there is nothing visual to tell me that a system failure has occured. Will this get logged in one of the event logs?.

Thanks again
Mike

I made the change as per the reply from "linney".
I shutdown the PC and got a blue screen with error IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and a load of other stuff talking about potential software/hardware problems.

I've checked on the web and microsoft support have a page about this. It looks like it could be roxio easy cd creator 5.0 which I have installed.

I will check the roxio website for updates.

many thanks
Mike

In answer to your question about logging of errors, have a look in the Event Viewer. Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by right clicking on the error line and selecting properties.

Take any error I.D. number and search for it on this site.

I had the same problem with XP after installing Roxio 5. You need to uninstall Direct CD and possibly also Take Two. Then reboot twice and the problem will go away. You can still use the other features of Roxio. Newposter
