XP Home to Linux with samba share over VPN

I am trying to connect a Computer Via a VPN to a Linux Box running SME Server I need to access a samba share, but when I conect the VPN I do not see any of the shared files, specifically a Access database which I want to access from an External location.

Anyone got any suggestions,

Do I need to install a samba client on the external machine?

or any other possible solutions will be greatly appreciated
