Hello all:

I am trying to repair my XP Home - OEM installed. I know the admin password. When I try repairing using the XP CD by hitting hit "R" and then typing "1" for C:/windows. It says me for an "administrator" password.

When I enter the password, it says it's invalid (the caps lock is NOT on and the password is correct - cuz I can use that to log on).

I called my OEM - DELL, about it. They admitted that there was a problem with their installation due to lack of info from Microsoft when I bought my computer. They said re-installing will fix it. But I don't want to re-install or lose all the softwares I have.

Also, they told me to call Microsoft since they have a fix for it. Does anyone know anything about it? Any suggestions?

Thank you

RiderJon

A bug in XP might enable access without Administrator password if you can get hold of a Windows 2000 CD Recovery Console.

There is also the article here which might help.

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - Q308402
Cannot Log On to Recovery Console After Running Sysprep in Windows XP

"As a workaround, the following files are available for download from the Microsoft Download Center. These floppy disks are required only if the hotfix discussed in this article has not yet been applied, you cannot boot the computer, and you need to use the Recovery Console to make repairs.

Windows XP Home Edition:
Download WinXP_en_hom_bf.exe now

A telephone call should suffice, contact Microsoft Support.

They probably have a Url to give you to get the fix.

Contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain and install the Q308402 hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services phone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.
