Hi,

Since a few days I have a problem with web sites....I just cannot open them anymore.
Only regular http sites don't work. I can't even get access to the setup page of my router and that's a webpage on my local lan.

I do have internet connection; a linux pc can access the internet (and the router's setup page).
My xp home pc does have internet access as well because I can connect to httpS and ftp sites, I can send/receive email (smtp/pop3), I can connect to my newsserver, I can ping, I can setup a vpn tunnel and a rdp session to my work, I can make a vnc connection to the linux pc, my virusscanner can download it's updates.

The only problem is that I can't open a normal web page anymore.

I ran a full anti-virus scan but nothing was found.
I ran a network sniffer to see if anything was running but I didn't see anything strange.
If I look at the taskmanager there are no programs running which I haven't seen before.
I disabled the XP firewall but no effect.
I disabled my virusscanner but no effect.

If I boot the pc in safe-mode with network support it all works again.
So the next step was changing the system config using the msconfig program.
I disabled all .ini files and the boot programs but no effect.
I booted in diagnostic mode so only the necesarry services are started but no effect either.

Just to be sure I replaced both the network card + cable.

I tried running the Microsoft Defender program but that program can't download updates. Windows updates don't work either.

So what is left?
Anyone got an idea what may cause this?

Thanks in advance,

Richard

Try checking for WinSock corruption. The links below will help you with this. The WinSock XP Fix Tool will automatically fix the problem for you. If you have Service Pack 2 installed there is the added functionality of the netsh winsock reset command. If you can access the Internet in Safe Mode w/ Networking try going to and running the online scanner to see if it detects spyware or any other malware.

This may sound like a simple solution but are these web pages in your Trusted sites? If so, is there a check mark in the Require server verification (https)? If there is, clear the check mark out. I always start with the easiest/simplest solution first.

Which version of IE are you using?

If it's IE7 try these. See if you have success by running IE7 with No Add-ons (right-click on IE Icon).

You could try resetting Internet Explorer settings. (Help and Support article)

"If disabling add-ons doesn't solve the problem, try resetting Internet Explorer back to its default settings. This removes all changes that have been made to Internet Explorer since it was installed, but it does not delete your favorites or feeds.

Close all Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer windows.

Click to open Internet Explorer.

Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.

Click the Advanced tab, and then click Reset.

Click Reset.

When you are done, click Close, and then click OK.

Close Internet Explorer and reopen it for the changes to take effect."

Any later updates may also have to be installed again?

If using IE7 try starting it without add ons
(start/programs/accessories/system tools/Internet explorer no add ons)
Does it then allow surfing?

I had a note book PC that a tech bought to me he could not get IE7 to surf, page can't be displayed. I installed firefox it worked ok. I when to Add & Remove Programs and uninstalled IE7 rowing it back to IE6, IE6 worked ok

Hi,

Thanks for your replies.

In my case it wasn't a IE7 problem because Firefox 2.x had the same problem.

The good news is that it's working again at home. I ended up re-installing several programs and after I re-installed my vpn client it suddenly worked again.

I did this before I read the replies here but I'll keep the links to the various websites mentioned.
After all, it may happen again someday.

So thanks again for the support given.

Richard
