One of our executives just brought his home computer in to be fixed. Windows XP Home running on a Sony Vaio. It boots, gives me the icons to select who I want to log in as, I make a selection, and within 5 seconds I get 'saving settings' and the computer goes back to the login icons. Any ideas of what is going on? Virus? Corrupted msgina?
corrupted SAM?

We have this problem at our comapny with Novell. Have to shut the laptop off for 10 minutes. If that doesn't work we R & R Novell

He may need to register windows. how long has he had the computer? after 30 days, if you dont register windows, then it will not let you login. he should have an option that asks him to register it before it logs him off.

Also you could try to log in in SAFE MODE as administraor to see if the other users are correctly setup and networks disabled.

I had the same problem recently with a colleague's home PC. I had your issue when I first booted up, it then prompted to be activated. I found that booting into Safe Mode then rebooting worked fine. Said PC also had a selection of 15 viruses, which was probably the cause.

Got it - took the hard drive out, put it in another computer as a secondary and ran housecall.antivirus.com against it, found 33 files infected with different trojans.
After I deleted them I had to run a repair reinstall of WinXP, but now it comes up.
