how do you get to group policies in XP home? can you not use gpedit in XP home?
One of my users just upgraded to service pack 2 and I want to turn off the auto update on shut down option. According to micorsoft this has to be done in the group policy. but home does not seem to have any group policy setting. do I have to do this in the registry maybe? if so does anyone know where?

There is no gpedit in Home, nor is provision made for the application of Group Policies in any formal way.

But if you think of the utility gpedit.msc as a fancy registry editor, then you are on your way to implementing many of the same settings using regedit.

The easiest way to adjust Windows Update is to use Control Panel, Security Center, and at the bottom click on Windows Update in the change settings section.

So I see on this site that I should add a value in the registry:
KEY: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
DWORD: NoAutoUpdate = 1

will this stop the autoupdate on shutdown?
thanks for all the help.

I cannot find a Windows Update schedule such as you describe.

The registry setting you mention above will disable all Windows Update activity.
