just curious how important these post sp1 hotfixes are. Here for example:

I do have sp1 on both the home and pro versions, but hesitant to install the newest updates from windowsupdate.com cause of problems of nonbooting and slowness from the hotfixes (read on pcworld.com) Just wondering about others views. Wondering what others have done and any info would be great !!!

Just my opinion -

I would consider a "Critical" update as something that should get updated. "Security" updates, well depends on your computer and where it's located (on a LAN) and what you do with it. I still would update them, just look at them befor and assess which ones you think you need.
Most of them you can go back or Uninstall.
Everyone has different opinions. I install just about all updates, however I usually do them oldest to newest, and only one or two at a time befor restarting. Takes a while, but works for me.

One you don't want is this.

819634 - You May Experience Performance Issues After You Install the 811493 (MS03-013) Package on Your Windows XP SP1-Based Computer

I can't recall any others that have caused problems. I always install my updates like a good little boy. Most make restore points before they get installed incase of trouble. It comes down to a personal choice as to whether the cure is worse than the problem, or in other words do you want MS to break your machine or some hacker.

NOTE: The QChain.exe tool is not required on Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 post-Service Pack 3 (SP3) updates. The hotfix installer in Windows XP and Windows 2000 post-SP3 updates includes functionality to support multiple hotfix installations.
