XP Home activation annoyance

I have someone's computer I've been working on who was plagued with viruses and spyware. After cleaning all those nasties off, there were several problems, such as notepad.exe missing. I decided I'd just do a repair install, so I started to do that. But somewhere during the install I received an error ( I can't remember it exactly, something like "Cannot find entry point..."). I researched this error and most said it had to do with using the XP Home cd to repair an XP SP1 install. Some said just click "OK" enough times until the error disappears. (btw, this happened on my home computer as well and clicking OK worked but I had some crashes after that when using windows). I figured I'd just slipstream SP1a into the XP install and put it on a bootable cd. This worked and I was able to install without problems, but I happened to skip the network setup part of the install because I thought I could do that later. So I reboot, and try to log on as one of the users and find out I have to reactivate Windows before I can log on. Of course, I can't change any settings because I can't completely log on and I can't activate because the network's not set up. I guess I can call Micro$oft or try dialing in, but I really didn't want to have to if possible. Is there any other way to get into the network settings? (btw, I DID try safe mode and got the same deal).

Let me add something here....
It didn't ask me to set up the network when I did the repair install, but it appears the network card is not set up. I can try to "activate over the internet" but it then just asks to dial out.

Here's an update... I tried going to the recovery console. I got to where I could pick an installation and I hit enter. Then the dang thing rebooted!

When you get to that point in the recovery console you must press the number beside the install you want to repair (usually 1).

If you just press enter without typing the number it will just reboot (which is really annoying because it takes so long to get that far).

I guess I was too frustrated to read the directions ;)

I just gave in and talked to the M$ recording over the phone to activate. Dialing up to activate didn't work and when I did it the monitor I was using couldn't handle the refresh rate so I couldn't read why it didn't work. But at least it's going now.

It turns out the network didn't work because I had disabled the network connection at some point before doing the repair install. I guess recovery console could've alleviated that.
