XP Doesn't see the DVD... but it's installed! 1

Can anyone help?

Our hard drive fried last week, so have bought a new one. Have installed Windows XP - so far so good...

The PC's original configuration included a DVD ROM (we later installed a CD-RW).

When XP boots it doesn't recognise the DVD - but is displayed in a list of "installed" hardware when using the "Add Hardware" Wizard.

Everything looks OK in the BIOS - but we cannot understand why it's not recognised on boot up.

Has anyone had this problem and can they help? NKA

Have a look in Device Manager and see if it is listed in there.

Have a look at the DVD fix via the link on this page under Windows XP fixes/ Restore CD/DVD drive to Explorer see if that does anything.

Try the DVD Troubleshooter via Help and Support program.

The Device Manager does not show the DVD (only the CD-RW) but the DVD can be selected from the "Add Hardware" (PC knows the DVD is attached as it's already listed) - can be selected here and works OK.

Have tried DVD troubleshooter - that takes you to the compatibility wizard (have got best driver for DVD according to PC).

However, we will definitely try the link later - see if that helps!

What baffled us is that the PC will boot the recovery/start up disk from the DVD no problem.... but then it's not there anymore! NKA
