I just bought a universal microphone and tried to record with Sound Recorder, but nothing comes up. I tested it using the wizard in the control panel, but nothing.

I have a laptop and have the microphone plugged into the right jack, why doesn't it work?

in Sound recorder you can go to Edit /Audio Properties

and then look under sound recording... is there anything there? .. do you have a choice between devices?

..if so try the other

Give it a try!

I only have the one choice: Yamaha DS1x Native Audio.

Check in Sndvol32.exe/ Master Volume/ Options/ Properties/ Recording/ Microphone, check there that Microphone is selected.

Check the Microphone Volume Control and click Advanced (under the Mute box), then select Boost.

Is it muted? Is it switched off on the Microphone?

Some troubleshooting tips here.

Run DXdiag from the Start Run Box and in DirectX test your Microphone via Network/ DirectPlay Voice and run the Wizard.
