Hi All have a very strange problem. One of our users have no icons on their desktop at all.

I have chesked the documents and settings\user\desktop folder and they are all in there and the permissions seem to be ok.

Any suggestions?

This is often a symptom of explore.exe crashing. If you use taskmanager to start explorer.exe, do the desktop icons return?

Try doing a right-click over the blank desktop, and click Arrange Icons By > Show Desktop Icons.

"Show Desktop Icons" should have a check next to it.

Hi explorer is not crashing as the user can use the computer as normall.

Have triedarranging desktop icons but still no joy.

Very strange

If the ICONS are not visible but the TASK BAR is, this could indicate a ICON CACHE corruption...

flush the ICON CACHE and see if that alleviates the problem...

A quick way to clear this cache is to go to the Appearance tab of Desktop properties and change the default icon size. If the current size is 32, change it to 33 then press the Apply button. After all the disk activity settles down, change the size back to 32, and apply again.

also this could very well be a PROFILE corruption...

here I would set up another Profile for the user to log into and see if it behaves the same or if it fixes the issue... then you can transfer the data over to the new profile and delete the messed up one...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

System restore might fix it?

What is ticked when you right-click the Desktop/ Properties/ Desktop/ Customize Desktop?

I was surprised that "Showing Desktop Icons" as per "guitarzan's" post didn't solve it.
