I have a XP workstation (SP1) on a domain and every now and then the date reverts back to the previous day, the time can also change but not always. This can happen three times a day and then not at all for a week. I have run anti spyware on this and it finds nothing. The Windows Time service is running. This has caused the user to miss meetings! Any help greatly appreciated.

Check the time zone. If the local machine is set up in the wrong time zone it may have some sort of issue with the server's time service.

Maybe your machine is synchronizing time with a server in the network and that machine has time set 12 hours off or wrong time zone.

Check date and time in control panel and see if your machine is set to synchronize with an internet time source. Try a different source or turn it off.

Try disabling the time service as a test to see if that stops the problem.

Replace the battery in the primary Domain server.

To see if it is the domain, at a command prompt:

net time /domain:<domain name>

if that returns the wrong date/time then the PDC is the culprit, whether due to time settings or hardware as Bill suggests.

Question, Bill - does the battery matter if the server is powered on? Maybe the old missing clock interrupts at midnight problem is back. Not likely an NT4 PDC, but maybe ...

JockMullin,

Time problems are hard, and I agree with your underlying thought that the CMOS clock matters only at startup in a Domain for a workstation.

The issue of concern for me is that a great deal of Windows security in a Domain is time dependent; and the primary Domain server is checked frequently.
