XP computer, very slow dial up modem, 2nd one installed

Hey Guys,

I am having trouble with a 56k modem in a customers ‘HP Pavilion 743’ ‘XP Home machine’, the problem is that it is only connecting at 25-35 kbps and the connection drops after about 25 minutes.

The customer has a laptop in the house that when connected using the same cabling will get a sustained connection of 44 kbps.

· There are no other applications running in the background
· All garbage has been disabled in MSCONFIG
· There are no extention cables just a short connecting cable provided with the modem to the wall (same cable is used with the laptop)
· Modem uninstalled/reinstalled in device manager
· All connections removed and just this dial-up connection set up again
· Problem persists 25-35 k/bits
· Windows updates turned off, nothing like kazaa etc on the pc
· Sent engineer to replace internal v92 modem
· New modem and the problem persists low speeds and dropouts
· Had phone line checked, 99% clear
· Sent out HP recovery disks and Norton 03 package
· Destructive restore completed
· New modem still as slow as the new one

You could try changing the the MTU value there are a numberof tweakers that will let you do this available, a search on google will allow you to download something.

You could also updating the firmware on the modem

I disagree slightly with Ali47gta, there is little wiggle room in TCP/IP tweaks under dial-up in the first instance, but the problem is fundamentally that the modem fails to negotiate a high-speed connection, and line noise can be ruled out (sort-of).

As you did a recovery disk restore, it is possible as Ali suggested above that you are behind in driver updates. Obviously start there, from both HP and the manufacturer's site that HP OEM'd the device. (Accton?)

What I strongly recommend is that you open the laptop next to the desktop and compare advanced settings on both machines from Control Panel. You may find such differences as the laptop doing V.90 while you are trying for V.92; the laptop has slightly lower settings for the receive buffer than the desktop; the laptop has some initialization strings (AT commands) that may benefit the desktop. Compare and contrast in detail the settings for each parameter of the connection between the two machines, and make the desktop match the settings of the laptop in all essentials. Then try again.

If it fails to negotiate a higher-speed connection at this point, purchase a good brand of external modem and install it. There are too many other possible things going on to bother with replacing the problem device with another internal modem.


 
I downloaded 3 x different drivers onto one of our lab machines and it affected the speed dramatically

went from 32 to 40 to 45.2kbps with the different drivers respectively

the fastest one was a 2 year old driver (and the only one that actually came from conexant who is the manufacturer)
