I have a WIndows 2000 AD controller and an XP client. The server and client sit behind a firewall doing NAT. The server is running DNS forwarding requests to a DNS server outside the firewall.

IF I set the DNS entry in the XP client network settings to the external DNS server, then the XP client can access web pages but cannot find the 2000 domain controller. You can't even "find" the server by name.

If I hard code the DNS entry in the XP client network settings to point to the domain controller, then the XP client can find and log into the domain controller, but it can't access web pages (dns lookup doesn't work)

Our 2000 pcs will work in either configuration, why won't our XP pc work ? Any suggestions ?

Does you servers DNS zone point to you ISP as forwarders? this would be what you need. Then the server could resolve internet addresses for the clients.

Yes, it is already set up to forward requests to the DNS server outside the firewall. This works for the 2000 clients but not for the XP client..

what you should need is to create fordwarders to your ISP, as jef is saying. YOu need to set DNS to resolve names in your internal network, and in Forwarders you have to use your ISP DNS ip address. A+, MCP, CCNA
