On booting up XP I got error message "the following file is missing or corrupt <<Windowsroot>/System32/ntoskrnl.exe" - system failed to boot

I booted the system using the XP boot CD and reinstalled XP hoping that it would install over the original and hence replace corrupted file(s). Instead it installed a second copy of XP. Now when I boot up I get choice of operating systems to boot from - the original XP, which is still corrupt and returns me to the boot-up menu, or the second one which does not recognise any of the applications that are on the system

Questions:

(1) How can I export the Registry from the original copy, import it into the second copy and then delete the original copy of XP

or

(2) how can I repair the original XP and delete the second one

Either solution will prevent me having to reinatall all my applications again

I have Norton Anti Virus which was up to date two days before this corruption event

With thanks
