I am obviously looking for a quick fix to my hard
drive problems, but here is my situation.

I have no problem going places that I shouldn't with
my software, but for some reason I panic when I take
the top off of my computer.

I have a Compaq Presario that has been enhanced (or not)
by several different people. It has a very small hard
drive 5 gig. Of course XP takes up most of it. For a
quick fix I purchased an external 60 gig hard drive, which
is working perfectly. My question is, can I install XP
on the external drive and make it my boot disk?

Thanks!

can you see this drive when you run setup if you can then you should be able to install other wise not. Depend on you BIOS whether it supports external drive.
