I am setting up a laptop that I plan on ONLY running Delorme Street Atlas GPS software and Windows Media Player for DVDs and MP3s.

I want to free up as much space on the HDD as I can so what elements of Windows XP can I uninstall to help clear up the needed space.

thanks in advance!

so far I turned off system restore, decreased pagefile to 256 meg and turned off hibernation. My used space is 2.2 gig

Now Im curious just how far I can go with this!

You could delete all the Windows service pack uninstall files in the c:\windows folder. They are hidden, so you have to turn on view system files and hidden files.

They are named like this and was 178MB on my PC.
c:\windows\$NtUninstallKB873339$

Anything in C:\windows\temp or C:\temp

Use CCleaner to remove other files that are spread around.

Delete contents of C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download AFTER you have run any MS updates. This is where they are stored. They will clean themselves up eventually, but you can do it ahead of schedule.
