XP and roaming profiles

We are in the process of moving our clients to XP SP2 from Win2k, i have noticed that the first time a user with a Win2k roaming profile logs on to an XP PC it takes about three minutes. After this it is fine (about 20 seconds) every time on XP and Win2k, can someone tell me why this is does XP make some kind of alteration to the dat file?
