I am running an AMD 1700 on a MSI K7T Turbo2 MoBo with a CD-ROM, DVD, 2 Hard Drives, Optical Trackball, and anyting from 256 to 768 MB of RAM. USED XP Home and PRO
When I built this machine I was not satisfied with it's performance, but kept the configuration as it was. Installed RAM from 256 to 768 trying to improve it's performance. Went from a Gforce2 to a Gforce4 with 128 RAM. I was still unhappy.
Lag time, slow program loads, constant screen blips, and Task Manager said I was running at 40 to 50 percent of my processor when nothing was on.
MSI couldn't come up with an answer, so they said to send it back. While trying to find a board to install while mailing the old, I noticed some problems with the CD-ROM. Extra long seak times, not seeing CD's, or just not working. Removed the offending unit and installed another.
I was amazed at the performance differance. Boot time decreased by 34 seconds, lag time disapeared, cable internet was actually fast. WOW Installed the offending drive in a Win98 machine and it worked for 1 week before it finally acted up and I removed it for future target practice.
What irked me was I put up with this machine for almost 1 year running slow, when it was the CD causing the problem. I guess I had better listen to the other experts when they say to remove the periferals and install them one by one to isolate the problem.
And I add another bad mark to my wall (it's almost black by now)
