Hi,

Fairly new install on XP home on P4 1.5 gig 512ddr.

just installed spybot and adaware, spybot found some stuff (only the usual cookies etc so did adaware), rebooted machine now xp gets as far as about 7 passes of the blue progress bar then locks up and gets no further. It used to get to the desktop after aboyt 3 passes of the progress bar now it locks up and doesnt load at all.

tried a restore to before this happened, restore appeared successful but still the same reult. Boots fine in safe mode so I know its a software issue.

Not sure what else I can do?

any help would be appreciated.

In Safe Mode go to Control Panel, Add/Remove. Are there entries for SpyBot and Adaware? If so uninstall.

What I am afraid of is that Adaware removed the wsaupdater reference of the logon:

When you mention restore are you referring to System Restore, or the built-in restore accompanying both Ad-Aware and Spybot D+D? If you haven't tried the latter two, then try them from Safe Mode, using their restore capability and see if you can then boot into Normal Mode. However if all they removed are Cookies, it is hard to see that they have caused your problem, unless it is as "Bcastner" says.

Other things you can try, as well as what "Bcastner" has suggested, is running from Safe Mode the ChkDsk utility. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
