xml -> SQL ; how to?

In the end, I hope to have an xml document taking the info off of a SQL server and displaying bits of the information into a pie chart or bar graph. For now, all I want to know is if anyone can give me a basic (very basic tutorial) on how to access the database info and how to display it on a webserver so that it can be exported into excel or word.
