I'm getting this error in the WSUS console:

Check your server configuration
One or more Update Service components could not be contacted. Check your server status and ensure that the Windows Server Update Service is running. Non-running services: SelfUpdate

WSUS has been working fine, in fact, I can't find any evidence that this error is causing a problem. However, the console started reporting this error some time within the last month or so. I've tried uninstalling IIS and WSUS and reinstalling both as one website suggested. I've tried the installselfupdateonport80.vbs. Both work for a few minutes, and then the error returns. I have another website on port 80 (WSUS console is at but that is not new to this server. Also, the other website has anonymous access disabled. I was told that this could be the problem, but this is not new to this server (although, I cannot swear that the change did not coincide with the arrival of the error message.) However, I was also told that reinstallation of the components would fix that too.

Any ideas?

UPDATE:

I've upgraded to WSUS SP1. The error isn't in the console now, but the Event log error for this problem is still there.

I used that script once and it stuffed the site up. I uninstalled WSUS (leaving the databases in place) and reinstalled using the default 8530 port given. This reinstall plus changing the GPO setting relative to this change resolved this site's issue. It also accepted the previously downloaded hotfixes located in the default folder.

I had raised a MS Gold partner support issue with this prior to the reinstall. Apart from going over the basics, they weren't able to resolve the issue with me.

Also, remember that the admin site and the client update site are different. You are probably aware of this already though.

Good luck

It turns out the problem was I have anonymous access turned off for the site, and had to enable anonymous access for the SelfUpdate Virtual Directory.
