Hello dear helpful Friends,

I have uninstalled an old version of Norton Antivirus and try now to install a new version, but when the installation program starts to run the procedure stops after some seconds with a black panel with the error message youcan see in the subject line above (WSIPX(01) + .......).
I'm running WinME, Swedish version on a Dell Desptop 1.4 GHz.
Any idea how to get around this?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Best regards
Lassas

This an error with programs using Windows Sockets with IPX
protcol. I will refer you to the Microsoft article.
Do a search for WSIPX.VXD if you have this program go get and update for it. The file is in NET4.cab you will have to use the extract command to reinstall it.

Thanks a lot Mrfixit, I had a quick look at the MSKnowledge Database entry you point at and it seems to contain interesting things. I'll have a look over eastern and see whether it helps or not.
Have a nice eastern holiday [bigsmile].

Hi all and especially MrFixit,
I tried the measures in Q189655 in MS Knowledge base you pointed at, but it didn't help me because it couldn't find the "symevnt.386" that could be the cause according to MS-KB.
However, another entry in the KB pointed me to which in turn gave me the necessary information after some searching in their KB.
I have attached the link to and the text from the Symantec report below.
This measure, i.e. delete of the "NWLink" registry value from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\..............\VxD made it possible to reinstall the new version of Norton Antivirus Protection.

Thanks for your time and engagement.
Best regards
Lassas

The text in the entry:
Norton AntiVirus 7.x Corporate Edition (change product)

Error: "Fatal Exception 00 in VXD Wsipx" when installing Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition 7.5

Situation:
When rolling out Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition (NAVCE) 7.5 to Windows 95/98 clients through an NT login script, you see the error message "Fatal Exception 00 in VXD Wsipx."

Solution:
This error can occur when there is a conflict with the Wsipx.vxd file or when the files used by IPX/SPX protocol are corrupted or not installed on the client. Adding the IPX/SPX protocol will enable the NAVCE installation to complete when this protocol has not been installed or needs to be reinstalled.

Try renaming the Wsipx.vxd to Wsipx.bak and then reboot the computer. Reinstall NAVCE. If the installation is successful, then rename the Wsipx.bak file to Wsipx.vxd, and then reboot.

If renaming and rebooting does not solve the problem, then use the following steps.

CAUTION: We strongly recommend that you back up the system registry before making any changes. Incorrect changes to the registry could result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Please make sure you modify only the keys specified. See the document How to back up the Windows registry before proceeding.

1. Click Start, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears.
2. Type regedit and then click OK. The Registry Editor opens.
3. Navigate to the following subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD

4. Right-click the NWLink registry value in the right pane, and then click Delete.
5. Click the Registry menu, and then click Exit to save the changes and close the Registry Editor.
