Would this work?

I have a D-Link DI-704 Router, 2K Server as a DC.
Using a Static IP on the server and the other machines on the network get their IP's through DHCP from the router.

I want to disable DHCP from the router, Enable it on the 2K Server, use the DNS from the 2K server as the DNS server on the client machines and then set the 2K server as DMZ in the router so it can get all info from the 13 root servers and such for DNS info.

Later on I'll add another network card and setup RRAS and such to remove the router totally, but as I'm still working on my MSCE Cert. I want to take things one step at a time.

If the router is connected externally, say to the internet, then removing it will leave a security hole larger than middle earth if you connect to the internet.

If you are not coneecting externally it will work fine.

Good luck on the mcse thing.

I agree with arteus, don't remove your router if it is your gateway. Especially if your RRAS server is a DC. You don't want your DC acting as a gateway! You can disable the services you don't want from the router and use your server for them though... Thanks,

Thanks for the responses,

You guys are definately right. I don't know what I was thinking when I suggested removing the router.

I appreciate it you setting me straight on it.

I think to answer your question about the DNS server, as long as your router allows port 53 in and out, then it should work.
