Hi guys (and gals) -am Newbie to Forum

I run a 2 NT servers remotely - I did not spec the topology
I am not over familiar with NT4.0
(not a good start) these servers run around 10 XP machines.

All was going kinda ok other than some occasional Log gripes until 2 days ago. Now 1 of the servers workstation service will not start.

the logs say (after an empty and a reboot)

3870 - Workstation - Office is not a valid computer Name. (Office is name of computer!?)

7002 - Service Control Manager - The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service depends on the NetworkProvider group and no member of this group started.

7001 - SrvceCntrlMngr - The Net Logon service depends on the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start.

7023 - The Workstation service terminated with the following error:
A duplicate name exists on the network.

7001 - The Alerter service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error:
A duplicate name exists on the network.

7001 - The Computer Browser service depends on the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start

7001 - The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error:
A duplicate name exists on the network

4 (my favourite) - ATAPI - Driver detect an internal error in its data structures for .

and then a few services do manage to creak into life.
END OF LOG

I read on this forum somewhere that a ~ denotes a corrupted wins database which often occurs on NT4 wins

As I said I am unfamiliar with NT4.0 and do not even know how to check/Find/LookAt my WINs database

Can anyone help at all.
TIA
desperate.

hi,

How many NIC's you are having in your server?

Aslam

If you are having 2 NIC's then this may be the problem

chances are that both network adapters are attempting to register the same NETBIOS name with WINS.
Use Control Panel / Network / Bindings tab/ Show Bindings For and click All Adapters

Click the plus sign next to the second network adapter.

Click NetBEUI Protocol, and then click Disable.

Click Close.

Shutdown and restart.

I have 1 NIC in each machine is this what you mean?
Thank ou so much for your help

Where do I find the WINS database?
Sorry for being so dumb I am not an NT4.0 guy

err. I think I must be extra dumb today.
I only have 1 NIC in each machine and I dont use NetBUI it is all TCP/IP (so no wins? right)

thanks again for any help on this one.

OK, this is (fingers crossed) the last stupid post today.
I have found the settings by RightClicking the Network Neighbourhood Button.

Showing Bindings For All services gives us:

Server->WINSclient(TCPIP)->MyNIC
Workstation->WINSclient(TCPIP)->MyNIC

That is the lot: Sorry for the wordyness but I wanted to be sure you people had a good picture of what is going on.
[please remember I am doing this all remotely]

Thanks so much for any light that can be shed in the dark world of my stupidity.

Hi,

I think you are conused with NetBUI nad NetBIOS.
You need NetBIOS for wins.
becauese NetBIOS to TCP/IP name resolution or WINS, is part of the NetBIOS over TCP/IP architecture
Here are the dierent links oe the same

go through the same

HTH Aslam

Thank you aslam - sorry for being a bit of a thickie -

I checked out the areas you mentioned and somehow (Juggling the Reboot sequence between the two machines) I have them both Browsing the network at the moment so Im not going to touch anything until the next time I need to shutdown.

as with all things I should RTBM
