Worksheet PRotection & Pivot Tables

I have a spreadsheet with a pivot table that "Refreshes on Open" as the data source is regularly updated. On the same spreadsheet there are cells which are updated manually by users, however, I want to protect some of those cells. Unfortunately it appears that Pivot Tables will not refresh automatically on protected workbooks? Are there any solutions out there?
