workgroup networking problem with sp2

I am getting nowhere with this and need some expert help.
I have a small network of three computers all running windows xp pro with service pack 2 I have just bought a new laptop and despite spending hours on it i can not access my network.
The laptop connects through a wireless card to a Belkin hub the other three computers are hard wired.
i have run the network set up wizard enabled file sharing turned off the windows firewall and hit my head against the wall but still no access when i look at the security log i have an error saying the username or password is not correct but there is no password set.
at one stage i tried removing service pack 2 and managed to connect but with the service pack re installed the connection is denied.
Please help before I Ebay the lot

I did install sp2 on my laptop, and uninstalled it to be able to connect to my wireless network. With SP2 i could not even connect to my network by connecting the cable directly to my laptop - SP2 sucks

Start off by enabling the guest account and making it a member of administrators, also make sure you have the same user setup on both machines and test that way. That will open it up and you should be able to get in that way. Then you can back down to a more secure environment. Also make sure your drives are shared.

I have noticed thet i can map a drive but only by typing the full path this seems to point towards the broadcast being stopped when its searching for the computers on the network.
