How long can a windows workgroup name be?
Can a windows workgroup name contain spaces?
Any pointers for samba friendly names?

A workgroup name must not be the same as the computer name. A workgroup name can have as many as 15 characters, but it cannot contain any of the following: ; : " < > * + = \ | ? ,

For the computer name, pick something short and unique. It must not contain spaces or special characters. If you pick a name that someone else is already using it will cause problems as will choosing a name identical to a username on the machine.
