WordPerfect hangs

I have delivered to a customer a Citrix Metaframe XPs FR3 on Windows Server 2003, only one Metaframe server, trying to run WordPerfect Office 12 as a published app. Active Directory is not installed, and there are no other Windows servers on the network. Citrix is primarily for application access at a remote office the firm has opened. The file server is a separate box running Netware 6.5, and I am authenticating Citrix sessions through NDS. In the main office, Citrix is not involved at all; users log in to Netware and run their apps there, including WP12.

Citrix users get their published apps via the Web Interface. All published apps work perfectly (GroupWise 6.5, MS Office 2003, and their law-office management applications), but WordPerfect will not run. It hangs at startup at least 50% of the time. It draws the screen, I can move the pointer, but when I type or click the mouse somewhere, the session hangs, becomes unresponsive. I cannot close it unless I open the Connection Center, pick the server and click Logoff. The app alone will not terminate.

If WP gets past that point and actually allows me to work, it will hang when I try to print about 80% of the time. CPU utilization is not high (I've seen WP hang with 100% CPU, but that's not it here).
Corel has been less than useless, did not even make an attempt to help. I followed what items I did find on their Knowledgebase regarding previous versions on Terminal Server, but they had nothing specific to 12.

I don't know if this is a problem with 12, but I don't have an 11 lying around to try. Also, I don't know if this is related to using NDS instead of Windows to authenticate, but I don't see how it could be. It may also be something with Server 2003 instead of 2000 Server. I have a nearly identical server at another law office right next door to this one, running Metaframe XPs FR3 on 2000 Server (not 2003), and WP11 (not 12) and it runs perfectly, they couldn't be happier.

After installing WP, I set default document and backup folders while change user /install was set, to set global defaults. I also have a registry key that I found while building the server next door, to set Perfect Print temporary files to a unique location by user. Other than that, I don't know what needs to be done, or even looked at.

Ideas, please?

Flipping heck, I once did a WP install, about 9 years ago if I remember correctly and it was a bit of a daymare. As with you Corel were as usefull as a chocolate fireguard. Sometimes if you are lucky there may be a how to on the citrix web site, I would start there on the knowledge base. Then have a look at thinplanet.

Sorry cannot be more help.
NDS should only casue an issue at login time not actually starting the app.

If you run at the console does it work ok, I mean use the console like a workstation and run it native rather than thru citrix?

Behavior at the console is the same, also at a published desktop. (I published the desktop to adminstrative users for tasks they might find a need to do.) Hangs, hangs, hangs. I'm thinking of stealing an 11 somewhere (another customer) and trying that, because I've never had this much trouble with it. If it still croaks, then I blame Server 2003 (vs 2000).

Anybody else? Step up to the plate, win the prize of the century for sharing your knowledge.

Blame WIn2K3 anyway [aside] cos we can[/aside]

If it wont run at the console then it is definately not a TS/Citrix issue

I've seen WP hang on loading when there is an issue with the default printer or the printer selected in WP. I've seen this in both Citirx and on individual workstations.

Do all the Citrix accounts have the same default printer? You might also "undo" your PerfectPrint registry hack, at least temporarily to see if that is causing a problem.

I've seen the printer setup cause a startup hang if there was NO default printer, but there is a valid printer. Still, the fact that if it doesn't hang at startup then it will probably hang at printing obviously points to some kind of printer issue. WordPerfect is notorious/heroic for providing their own print processes instead of using Windows. I say notorious because this kind of crap happens, and heroic because for a single-user machine, WP's print handling is light-years ahead of Windows, especially when it comes to docs with multiple paper types. Which, of course, is why the legal world loves it so much. Anyway, I've seen things about forcing Windows printing instead of WPs processes, I think I'll start looking into that.

Update:

I put an item in the HKCU\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run to start "\program files\wordperfect office 12\programs\printserver120.exe" because I'd seen something about the printer service not being able to start correctly in Terminal Services, and WordPerfect now runs perfectly in a desktop session, but it still hangs as a published app. Now my question is: Is the PrintServer120.exe a per user process, or a per server process. In other words, if it's already running, do subsequent users even need to worry about it? Is there any reason not to put it into HKML (instead of HKCU as I was informed elsewhere)?
