when i open MS word, an old document is always opening. I delete this, but it autorecovers itself.. I have deleted and copied a good working version of normal.dot but this doc still opens first..
is there any way other than reinstalling office to get a clean template??

try this out:
Find the shortcut icon for Word, usually in (around) c:\program files\microsoft office\office\winword.exe,
right click on the icon, select Properties, click onto the Shortcut tab, under Target, make sure its just the path for the actual executable, nothing trailing after "WINWORD.EXE", like a switch calling the document you stated,

good luck,

And you could, with Word closed, search for and delete normal.dot [I'd move it to a floppy, keeping note of where it was found]. It should be re-created next time Word opens.

You may also want to look in the Office Startup folder. You can find out the location in your Word - Options -File Locations. If there is a doc or dot in there, it will load.
