Any clue to why simply opening Word clears the Windows clipboard but opening Word and then copying makes Paste available in Word? All I see on Microsoft deals with Works Suite and Word that comes with it but I have Office XP Standard installed, not Works Suite. Excel doesn't have the problem but Outlook does when composing a new message since it uses Word.

Could we get a bit more detail? I can copy to the clipboard and whether Word is opened before, or after, I can still paste. In Outlook, from Outlook, it all seems to work. I am using Office 2002, but I do not have Word set as the email editor - which may be the difference.

Are you saying that you have something in a new Outlook message that you want to paste into Word? Or something in Word that you want to paste into a new message in Outlook?

I can copy text from this page and paste it into any program after I open that program, except Word XP/2002. Word appears to delete the contents of the Windows clipboard as it opens, making the contents unavailable. Excel and PowerPoint don't have the problem, Outlook does in the New Message compose window because it uses Word.

It's a documented problem [by Microsoft] with Word 2000 and Works Suite versions 2000 through 2003, but I don't have Works Suite installed. I do have Office XP/2002 Standard installed.

The problem does not exist with WordPerfect, WordPro, Wordpad, or OpenOffice.

Hmmm. You must have something configured differently tham me. I also running Office XP (2002).

You mentioned copying "this page". By that I assume you are referring to a HTML page, a web page. So I selected parts of this page, copied to the clipoard - Word was not open, so I opened it, and did a Ctrl-V abd it pasted exactly what I had selected and copied from this page.

I did the same with Word open, and it worked, Word closed then opened and it worked. Sorry I can not seem to duplicate the problem - although I can certainly see that it must be annoying behaviour. Good luck and if you find out what the problem is, post back here if possible. I for one am curious.

Thanks. There's several folks have the problem with differing setups and can't get a handle on a common thread to pull. The only thing I see so far is that it occurs with WinXP SP1a and Word XP/2002.

The problem does not occur on my Notebook with WinXP HE and Office XP/Word 2002.

I didn't copy the whole page, just some selected text on it. On the Notebook I copied some text from a WordPerfect document for the pasting test.

Forgot to mention, the Notebook does not have SP1a on it.

Ah, maybe that is the difference. I am running Office XP (2002), but the OS is Windows 2000 - SP4, not Windows XP. Good heavens - they couldn't be that sloppy could they? Does XP (the OS) handle the clipboard differently? I can definitely paste fine from anywhere.

Hmmmm.

I can paste fine into all programs I have except Word. Ran into someone today that has the same issue.

I upgraded to Office 2003 last night and the issue I have is still there. With Word open I can copy and paste into it from anywhere.

If I copy anything and then open Word, it clears the clipboard in the process and there's nothing to paste, command is grayed out.

It is verifiable by having the Clipboard Viewer open/contents visible and then opening Word then minimizing it, Clipboard is immediately cleared of its contents.
