Does anyone know if Microsoft Word has file size limits? A user is trying to save a large document (over 200 pages/2MB) and gets the disk is full or write protected error
If a document is too large to save, you can divide it into smaller parts. Cut part of the document and paste it into a new document, and then save each part individually. To print the files in sequence, use INCLUDETEXT fields to connect the documents.
Convert the document into a master document, and save its components as individual subdocuments.
2MB is NOT too large to save.
There are many other reasons why this would occur.
If the file keeps exhibiting that behavior, try saving it as RTF, close, reopen, and save as DOC again. Of course--do this with a COPY of the document.
Word's file size limit is, like many applications, restricted only by the size of the hard drive and the memory (RAM) available on the PC.
Thanks everyone, for your help. Actually the user gave me the wrong error message. The actually message reads The Disk is Full or Too many files are open.
She has this state document that cannot be divived into parts. I tried saving as RTF and resaving as DOC. I was able to save the RTF, but not the DOC.
What I have found out is that she has numerous links within this document that are either corrupt or invalid. I have not been able to fix this. Still working on it this am
Hi there!
This sounds like a [red]version problem [/red]to me: Did she open the doc with a different Word version than it was created on? I usually have this error with some Word 97 RTF larger than 1 MB if I try to open them in Word 2k.
Workaround: If possible, save the Doc with Word 95 as DOC. That should already fix it. Strangely, Word 95 has a better coding than Word 97/98...
If Word 95 n/a: Try saving with Word 2kas WordPerfect doc.
This is a well-exchangeable format.
Best wishes,

Also, she is not closing out Word, she is just trying to save the document.
The PC is new with WIndows 2000, 256MB Ram, and 80Gb of hard drive space.
I looked it up on Microsoft and they said it was corrupt or invalid links. There is maps and pix that she download from web sites. I'm thinking they are still linked to those websites. How's that sound?
>>Also, she is not closing out Word, she is just trying to save the document.
I understand that. But if there are multiple instances of Word running, it can easily cause the error message you're getting. That error message OFTEN means there's just not enough resources, which means the hard drive is dirty, there's a bunch of stuff running in the background that shouldn't be, a corrupt file...too many reasons to mention.
Cut the maps/pix and hit Edit-Paste special-As a picture.
Oh, sorry, I understand. I wish this was the case, but I copied the document to my PC and I can't save it either. This is really a hard "nut" to crack. You can open, copy, and modifiy, but you can't save.
Have you tried renaming.
Have you tried Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, open new doc, paste and save?
Try saving as an RTF (then close, reopen, and save as doc again)? Doing that often gets rid of corruption.
Hi Dreamboat:
You have a good point about the background processes (e.g. some macro opening and not closing a word instance).
However: Doc-Format is not as exchangeable as RTF, but more stable. If you have special characters, saving in RTF might corrupt them. Plus RTF can easily get about ten times the size of DOC.
If it's a version problem, she won't be able to save as rtf anyway, I'm afraid... :-(
The copy/paste version and save in other document method should work however. Worth a try, although some formatting might mess up.
But I assume this won't be the last document this user will handle, so you should find a long-term solution. (e.g. different format...)
I am working with various file formats and Word versions every day and I have more than once cursed upon certain Word "features"
Hope any of the above help.

I get "The Disk is Full or Too many files are open" message frequently when cutting and pasting equations. I use to think I had it figured out--it always happens when I paste an equation at the exact time that the "automatic (background?) save" kicks in, but it happens at other times, too.
Anyway, the following fix is a nuisance, but always works for me...
Ctrl+A (Select All) Ctrl+C (Copy to Clipboard) Close Word, being sure to answer YES when it prompts:
"You placed a large amount of text on the Clipboard. Do you want this text to be available to other applications after you quit Word?"
Reopen Word Ctrl+V (Paste from Clipboard) Save (can use original name and overwrite, or give a new name)
>>You have a good point about the background processes (e.g. some macro opening and not closing a word instance).
Macros, by far, are NOT the only reason that Word might remain running in the background.
>>Doc-Format is not as exchangeable as RTF, but more stable. If you have special characters, saving in RTF might corrupt them. Plus RTF can easily get about ten times the size of DOC.
While I disagree with your statements, they may be true. However, saving as RTF was only one step. I never intended that it should be kept in RTF format.
>>If it's a version problem, she won't be able to save as rtf anyway, I'm afraid...
I have no idea what the basis would be for this statement. I know of NO version problems that cause what this user is experiencing. I run 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003, and began troubleshooting Word in Office 95.
>>But I assume this won't be the last document this user will handle, so you should find a long-term solution. (e.g. different format...)
Why find a long-term solution to ONE potentially corrupt document?
>>I am working with various file formats and Word versions every day and I have more than once cursed upon certain Word "features".
What features does this user's question deal with that is cursed? Tho my book includes a chapter called "Features I could live without", which was originally titled "Features that Suck", but I toned it down a bit, hee hee.
I got this message frequently when trying to open Word 97 RTF containing Eastern European special chars (e.g.Polish chars).
Often, I also get the message "Insufficient RAM to complete the operation." - On a 512 MB, 1 Ghz Win 2k computer.
Sometimes, language-specific characters also get corrupted in everyday use - as ordinary Office-document corruption.
However, if these are displayed in the doc e.g. as boxes, saving as RTF will leave them as boxes. However saving with Word 95 as Doc will return the original chars.
Just a few of the "features" I meant. I used to think sth like "Word is Word". Word 2k has more possibilities than Word 97, but a doc is a doc... In the past three years, I have painfully learned that this is not always so.
So: no offense intended, none taken. [santa2]
Cheerio,
Andy
