Recently I formatted and re-installed everything. Including Office XP. All works well except Word. Each time I try to open Word, the msg pops up that Word failed to start correctly last time. If yes, then I get a blank page. If no, msg says to send or not to send info to Microsoft, then closes if check box is unchecked to restore process.

I have un-installed/re-installed several times to no help,

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx.

Kim

Have you installed a default printer driver yet? Word needs a printer driver to run correctly.

BTW, uninstalling and reinstalling Office rarely fixes any problems as the registry and templates, etc. are not removed.

Yup! got the default printer installed.

So if uninstalling does not work, then what is the solution? Reformatting? seems to be such a severe way to handle the problem. Throwing the baby out with the bath water.

Thanx.

Test to see if Word will open in Safe Mode. From the Start, Run dialog, type in

winword /a

and press enter. Word will open in safe mode which is its basic install mode bypassing all templates, macros and add-ins. this will tell us if it is the Word installation that is broken or some outsiode influence breaking Word.

BTW, to completely uninstall Office, after using Add/remove programs to uninstall, you can downlaod a utility from the Office Support site at Microsoft called eraser2002.exe (or maybe eraserXP.exe) that when run will remove all vestiges of the installationb fully.

Can open in safe mode. This is the msg I now receive when not opening in safe mode: Runtime error! Program: C:\Program Files\.......\WINWORD.EXE abnormal program termination.

Click ok and the program closes. Next time up it says to enter in safe mode. If not, it closes.

Thanx for the help.

This may be a corrupt normal.dot but most likely a bad macro. Try renaming normal.dot as normal.bad (usually it is in Docuemtns and Settings, username, Applications data, Microsoft, Template folder).

If it still errors after renaming normal.dot, check in Word Startup and Office Startup folders for thrid party templates and rename them templatename.bad.

If you still have the problem, open in Safe Mode again and look in Tools, Macros and rename all the macros by placing an XXX in front of the macroname (to stop them running). Retest Word and if it then starts, gradually reverse the process until you find the culprit.

Thanx for the response. I renamed the normal.dot and that appeared to solve the problem. Tried to change the default font and nothing sticks. Went to Format, Fonts, picked what I wanted and then hit the default button on the bottom. this has worked before but not now.

How to?

Thanx.

Kim

Have you installed Acrobat v7? After the last few versions of Acrobat caused Word to save normal.dot everytime you closed Word, the brilliant developers at Adobe have solved the problem by making absolutely sure that nothing ever gets saved to normal.dot!

See the following link for a solutiojn:

The unknowing can certainly be screwed in a heart beat without the ensuing kiss.

Many thanx for your help. Oh yes, I do have adobe 7, the $%#&^%.

tf1,

Looked for both eraser2002 and eraserxp at Bill's house and could only find eraser which is for 2000. Could it go by another name?

Thanx.
