I have been using a template that incorporates paragraph numbers, and I need to create a table of contents that refers to the paragraph numbers. I can't see an option anywhere in the Index and Tables > Table of Contents menu.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi annared,

Most likely the document you saw was structured using Word's Heading Styles for the numbered paragraphs that appeared in the TOC.

have you tried the bookmark?

Where I work, the Table of Contents always shows the paragraph number, where it is part of the heading. I was under the impression that it happened automatically. We use Word 2002.

If the style used to generate the ToC is numbered, then the ToC will be numbered. If the style is not numbered, then the ToC will not be numbered. ToC is generated by styles.

eyec - not sure what you mean by trying bookmarks.

sorry, i re-read your post and mis-understood what you wanted to do.

i thought you wanted to be able to click on the TOC paragraph # & jump to the para.

For the documents I use, the TOC style is not numbered, but some of the HEADING styles have automatic paragraph numbers. Those values show with numbers on the TOC, whereas HEADING paragraphs without a number show without a number.

Let's be clear.

ToC items are generated by Word looking for whatever Style is set for the ToC. There are default styles (Heading 1, etc), but the styles that the ToC looks for can be any style.

You could generate a ToC using MyBlahDoDah style for level 1, ZippyTheDog style for level 2, Humbug style for level 3.

The ToC will be generated using the content of paragraphs using those styles.

The style of the ToC itself - that is, the format of the ToC item - is determined by the TOC style.

They are two very different things.
