Word Re-accessing Remote Original

When remote working, I often take a local copy of a doc to reduce the time waiting for Word to open it over the link. However Word still insists on spending up to half a minute doing remote access (the DSL router gets busy) before it finishes opening.

I tried changing the template to normal.dot but it makes no difference. It still seems to do it if I re-name the doc and make copious amendments to it.

What is Word doing and, more importantly, how can it be stopped?

Are you sure that's what's taking so long? Norton antivirus wants to scan documents and can cause this; turn off scanning of Office documents in your Norton AV if that's the case.

Where is your Word executable?
Also, go to Tools-Options, File locations. Make sure everything it's using is local.

I'm taking guesses here; I really don't know.

Also check what copy you are loading. If you have opened the doc from an email Word creates a real copy (NOT a pointer) of the file in the doc&Settings/username/blah bla/OLKxxxx folder under Temp Internet Folders. If that is the case, when you load you may in fact be loading off the network OLKxxxxx folder, rather than the local file. This is also a serious issue regarding version control. If you load a word doc from an email, and changes you make are to the REAL doc in the OLK folder, not (what you may think) in the original.

When you say you take a local copy what precisely are you doing?

Another good point Anne (and once again welcome back!!!). That would definitely cause a slow down if it was loading a template/addin from a server.

In fact Dooda, I would certainly check Anne's suggestion first. I had not thought of that, but it would be a very good place to start looking.

Come to think of it, I going to do some checking myself.

Many thanks for all the extremely prompt suggestions.

To answer the questions -
[ol]
[li]Anti-virus may well be operating (it's a corporate requirement) but there is no delay on docs I create, as opposed to copy. A 100K doc I created opens in around a second.[/li]
[li]MS Word executable is on the laptop's C: drive as is all software, to make "un-networked" operation possible. All Word's file locations are also on the internal drive[/li]
[li]I am copying by using drag and drop with Win Explorer to the internal drive. My Outlook configuration puts all the OLK temporary stuff on the internal drive anyway.[/li]
[li]Templates were an early suspect and changing to normal.dot didn't seem to help, surprisingly[/li]
